In today's markets, the industrial design of a product is as important as its technical design. Materials play a central role in creating the aesthetics, the associations and the perceptions of a product. Their selection to provide technical function is well understood. Their selection to create the aesthetics of the product - the ways in which it is seen, how it feels and sounds - is less easy to analyse, yet it is as essential a part of successful design as the functionality itself.

This new book (which complements Mike Ashby's book on Materials Selection in Mechanical Design) explores the role of materials and processes in product design, with emphasis on the ways in which they can be used to create the aesthetics and associations of the product, and the ways in which it is perceived. The methods are supported by some 100 profiles of materials and processes, emphasising the attributes most relevant for product design.
